Canada is at an inflection point. We have world-class AI research happening at universities in Toronto, Montreal, and Edmonton. We have talent that's globally recognized. And yet, a troubling number of Canadian entrepreneurs are still treating AI like a buzzword rather than a business tool.
This isn't just a missed opportunity, it's a competitive threat. While Canadian businesses deliberate, American and international competitors are using AI to move faster, serve customers better, and cut costs in ways that are difficult to reverse.
The Gap Between Research and Application
Canada's AI research ecosystem is genuinely world-class. Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, and the teams they've built have produced breakthroughs that power the tools millions of people use every day. But there's a persistent gap between the research happening in our universities and the adoption happening in our small and medium businesses.
According to conversations I've had with dozens of entrepreneurs on this podcast, most know AI is important, but very few have a clear strategy for applying it to their specific business context.
Where to Start
The good news is you don't need a computer science degree to begin. Start with the problems that cost you the most time. Customer communication, content creation, data analysis, scheduling, these are all areas where AI can give you hours back every week.
The key is to start small, measure the impact, and build from there. AI adoption isn't a one-time project; it's a new muscle you build over time.
